Commissioned under Napoleon, the Arc de Triomphe took shape through changing political regimes: construction ran from 1806 to 1836. Its sculpture and inscriptions celebrate French armies, but the meaning of the monument extends beyond military victory. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and its commemorative flame make the space beneath the arch a place of remembrance. From the surrounding avenues, notice how the arch acts as a visual endpoint for the Champs-Élysées.

The Champs-Élysées runs for nearly two kilometres between the Arc de Triomphe and Place de la Concorde. It combines luxury shops, cafés and major public events with a broad, carefully framed urban axis. For a sightseeing ride, the direction of travel and the chosen viewing position matter as much as the landmark name.

Place de la Concorde has repeatedly changed its name and meaning. Created to honour Louis XV, it became Place de la Révolution, where Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette were executed. The later name Concorde expressed a hope of reconciliation. The Luxor obelisk was raised here in 1836, bringing a much older Egyptian monument into this Parisian setting. Around the square, statues represent French cities, while two monumental fountains complete the composition. Today's traffic arrangements and redevelopment make the choice of a viewing position especially important.

Pont Alexandre III opened for the 1900 World's Fair. It joins the Invalides side of the Seine with the Grand Palais and Petit Palais on the opposite bank. Four tall corner pylons, crowned with gilded winged horses, give the bridge its unmistakable silhouette. The richly decorated crossing also creates a panoramic stage: the river, the Eiffel Tower and neighbouring monumental buildings can all become part of the story. A landmark coordinate at the bridge is useful for discovery, but the bridge's roadway and pavements require separate decisions about passing and stopping.

Louis XIV founded the Invalides in 1670 to care for soldiers whose age or injuries prevented them from serving. Its purpose expanded over time into a wider military and cultural complex. The dome became associated with Napoleon after his remains returned to France in 1840; they were placed in the present monumental tomb in 1861. From outside, the gilded dome is the clearest identifying feature, but it is only one part of a much larger site.

Orsay was built as a railway station for the 1900 World's Fair, with Victor Laloux giving modern railway engineering an elegant stone façade. As trains became longer, the station lost its original main-line role. Its transformation into a museum culminated in the public opening in 1986. The great central hall still makes the building's railway past legible. In 2026 the museum announced major restoration and visitor-access work while remaining open.

The Louvre's story begins with a defensive fortress built under Philippe Auguste from 1190. It later became a royal residence and expanded into a vast palace through successive reigns. The museum opened in 1793, turning royal and other collections into a public cultural institution. I. M. Pei's glass pyramid, inaugurated in 1989, added a modern visitor entrance to this layered setting. From outside, compare the long palace façades with the courtyard composition. The palace's exterior and the galleries inside offer different ways to explore this landmark.

Catherine de' Medici created a garden beside her Tuileries palace in 1564. Its name recalls the tile workshops that once occupied the area. André Le Nôtre reshaped the garden from 1664, strengthening its long central axis and formal arrangement. The palace has disappeared, but the garden preserves a visible link between royal Paris and today's public city. Look along the central perspective and compare the open pools with the tree-lined walks. Garden circulation and an outside vehicle stop require separate checks.

Built for Cardinal Richelieu from 1633, this palace later became associated with the royal family. Its gardens and surrounding galleries developed into a lively setting for commerce, theatre and political discussion, especially around the Revolution. Today the ensemble also houses major state institutions. The contemporary courtyard installations add another artistic layer to this historic setting.

Construction of Notre-Dame began in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully, with successive generations shaping the cathedral. Its river-island position helps explain the historic importance of Île de la Cité. The fire of 15 April 2019 destroyed the roof and spire and led to an extensive restoration. Reopening ceremonies took place on 7 and 8 December 2024. From outside, the western façade and river-side structure offer different ways to read the building.

Louis IX commissioned the Sainte-Chapelle in the thirteenth century to house precious Christian relics acquired for the royal collection. The building contains a lower and an upper chapel, with the latter surrounded by fifteen great stained-glass windows. Their biblical scenes turn the walls into a coloured narrative. Much of the monument's present appearance also reflects nineteenth-century restoration.

The Conciergerie preserves parts of the medieval royal Palais de la Cité. After the monarchy moved away, its role shifted towards justice and imprisonment. During the Revolution it became associated with the Revolutionary Tribunal and detainees including Marie-Antoinette. The river façade makes the former palace visible from the Seine, while the interior visit explores its halls and prison history in greater detail.

Work on the Pont Neuf began in 1578 under Henri III and was completed in 1607 under Henri IV. It crosses both arms of the Seine at the western end of Île de la Cité. Unlike many earlier bridges, it was built without houses, leaving room for views and pedestrian pavements. Carved masks, known as mascarons, animate its stone edges. The bridge's name once described a new urban idea; today it belongs to the oldest surviving layers of Paris's river crossings.

Henri IV established Place Dauphine in 1607 on the western part of Île de la Cité. Its name honours the Dauphin, the future Louis XIII. The unusual triangular plan fits the island's shape and creates an intimate space behind the Pont Neuf. The equestrian statue of Henri IV stands nearby on the bridge ensemble, rather than in the middle of this square.

The Hôtel de Ville is a civic landmark with a dramatic break in its history. The previous building burned during the Paris Commune in May 1871. Théodore Ballu and Édouard Deperthes designed the replacement, inaugurated in 1882, recalling the earlier Renaissance exterior while rebuilding the interiors. Its large forecourt provides a clear view of the façade and also serves as a setting for public events. The building remains a working city hall, so seeing it from the square is different from arranging an interior visit.

Completed as Place Royale in 1612, this carefully composed square combines red brick, pale stone and sheltered arcades. Its central garden is officially Square Louis-XIII, a part of the larger Place des Vosges ensemble. The arcades and enclosed garden offer different ways to enjoy the ensemble. Victor Hugo's former home at number 6 adds a literary connection to the setting.

The Centre Pompidou's Beaubourg building has been a Paris landmark since 1977. Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers placed many structural and service elements on the outside, making coloured pipes part of its identity. Blue marks air systems, green water, yellow electricity and red the movement of people. The main building closed in autumn 2025 for a major renovation, with reopening planned for 2030. The institution continues activities elsewhere. Its architectural story can still be discussed, while construction conditions may change the view from surrounding streets.

Jacques-Germain Soufflot designed this building as a church dedicated to Saint Geneviève. Completed in 1790, it became a national burial monument in 1791, although its function changed again under later regimes. The portico and dome make its monumental ambition visible across the Latin Quarter. In 1851, Léon Foucault used a pendulum here to demonstrate the Earth's rotation.

Marie de' Medici began acquiring land for this garden in 1612, creating a setting for her new Luxembourg Palace. Later changes shaped the garden's present boundaries and arrangement. The central pool and Medici Fountain provide distinct focal points, while the palace now houses the French Senate. This is a garden to explore on foot: the Senate's official rules prohibit cycling and restrict vehicle circulation.

The present Saint-Sulpice was built from the seventeenth century on the site of an older church. Its monumental façade gives the neighbouring square a strong architectural edge. Inside, Eugène Delacroix's paintings in the Chapel of the Holy Angels, the Cavaillé-Coll organ and the gnomon support three different stories: art, music and astronomy. Popular fictional associations can be mentioned as fiction, without turning them into historical evidence.

The abbey's origins lie in a sixth-century foundation associated with King Childebert. Viking attacks damaged the early complex, and rebuilding around the year 1000 gave the church a new architectural layer. The choir was consecrated in 1163. The church later became a parish church and remains part of the living Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighbourhood. Its exterior offers a useful contrast with the district's later cafés and streets.

The garden grew from a seventeenth-century royal project for medicinal plants and teaching. A first founding edict dates to 1626, followed by land acquisition and later confirmation; public opening came in 1640. The site subsequently became a centre for natural-history research and collections. The Rue Cuvier entrance address does not describe every entrance or building in this extensive scientific landscape.

The Palais Garnier was inaugurated on 5 January 1875, after a project launched under Napoleon III. Charles Garnier designed more than an auditorium: staircases, foyers and elaborate decoration made arrival and social display part of an evening at the opera. Its exterior remains an important landmark in the Opéra district.

Place Vendôme was created under Louis XIV as a carefully controlled display of royal authority. Its clipped corners give the square an octagonal outline within a unified architectural setting. The central Vendôme Column, erected in 1810 under Napoleon, draws on the example of Trajan's Column in Rome. Later, jewellery houses and luxury businesses changed the square's public identity. Compare the column's vertical line with the even rhythm of the surrounding façades.

Paul Abadie's Romanesque-Byzantine design was selected for the Sacré-Cœur in 1874. The first stone was laid in 1875, and consecration followed on 16 October 1919. Its hilltop position makes it both a place of worship and a recognisable skyline landmark. Montmartre's slopes, stairs and dense pedestrian areas require a route suited to the visitor and the chosen transport.

Place du Tertre preserves the scale of old village Montmartre near the Sacré-Cœur. The former town hall was established at number 3 in 1790, linking the square to local administration before Montmartre became part of Paris. Today painters and portrait artists give the space its familiar identity, alongside restaurant terraces and heavy visitor movement.

Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler opened the Moulin Rouge on 6 October 1889 at the foot of Montmartre. Its red windmill became an unmistakable sign for a new entertainment venue during the Belle Époque. The cabaret's history is closely associated with the French cancan and the changing world of Parisian nightlife.

A tizennyolcadik századi épület egykor a brit hadsereg főhadiszállása volt. Lovas őrök és ünnepélyes alkalmak ma is szorosan kötődnek a helyszínhez.
